Mid-Day Report: Keep Jarrett Jack?

February 26, 2009

Pacers and Jarrett Jack: When the Indiana Pacers acquired point guard Jarrett Jack from the Portland Trail Blazers on draft day 2008 - in the trade that also netted them Josh McRoberts and the rights to Brandon Rush for Ike Diogu and the rights to Jerryd Bayless - it wasn't real clear where he fit in. During his days in Portland he had started and come off the bench, sometimes at point guard and sometimes at shooting guard. He had shown to be a better player in halfcourt sets and to be a physical defender. He could get to the hoop and sometimes convert, and his three-point range was inconsistent, a work in process.

Predicting Summer Trades

February 25, 2009

The trade deadline has come and gone, meaning that fans of NBA transactions will have to wait a few more months for any other significant moves, but that doesn't mean we can't talk about what some of those moves might be. In a continually changing economy teams are forced to take a creative look at their rosters. For some teams that means shedding salaries, and for others that means reaping the rewards of that shedding. Here's a sneak peak at some players we can expect to see traded this summer:

Bryant leads late surge as Lakers put away Thunder (AP)

February 25, 2009

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook goes up for a layup over Los Angeles Lakers' Josh Powell in the second half of an NBA basketball game in Oklahoma City, Tuesday Feb. 24, 2009. Los Angeles won 107-93.

Kobe Bryant needed just a few minutes to thwart an Oklahoma City rally and put the Los Angeles Lakers on the way to improving the NBA's best record. It took quite a bit longer to shake off the effects of the ankle injury he suffered in the process. Bryant scored 10 of his 36 points in a 3-minute span of the fourth quarter to stave off the Thunder's comeback bid and lead the Lakers to a 107-93...

Sefolosha makes instant impact with Thunder (AP)

February 24, 2009

Thabo Sefolosha made an impact in his first practice with the Oklahoma City Thunder, right above Earl Watson's eye. One of two players acquired by the Thunder at the trade deadline, Sefolosha split open the area around Watson's right eyebrow with an elbow as he drove to the basket during practice Monday.

Award Watch: Rookie Rankings

February 23, 2009

For the first time all season, Derrick Rose and O.J. Mayo are both outside of the Top Three. This isn't a testament to they playing particularly poorly; instead it's about how well the rest of these guys have played. This is truly a remarkable rookie class—probably the best since 2003—making these rankings especially difficult to do sometimes. This week was probably the hardest yet, but there's no easy way to separate some of these guys.

Mid-Day Report: Spending OKC’s Cash

February 23, 2009

Thunder's Free Agent Focus: After the Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded their trade of forwards Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith for center Tyson Chandler, it's probably no surprise they would like to go after a big man in free agency this summer.
