After defeating three division leaders, it's impossible to deny the Magic the top spot in the NBA Power Poll.

Morning Report: Vinny Needs To Stop

January 20, 2009

Why Coaches Don't Select Awards? There is a reason coaches are not asked to pick the post-season award winners, mainly because they would pick their own guys regardless of their merits. Bull's head coach Vinny Del Negro proved that point last night telling gathered reporters that in his mind rookie Derrick Rose is the hands down Rookie of the Year and that there is "not even a conversation."

The NBA's arrival in town was something to celebrate, the unveiling of the Thunder nickname a long-awaited event that packed the lobby of a downtown building with anxious fans. "That was only the beginning," Bennett, the Thunder chairman, said Monday.

Morning Report: No JO Deal?

January 19, 2009

Marion For JO?: This weekend rumors ran rampant that the Miami HEAT and the Toronto Raptors were close to consummating a swap that would have sent Jermaine O'Neal to Miami in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. There are a couple of issues with that – namely Raptors' GM Bryan Colangelo recently denied any interest in moving O'Neal , although things do change on a daily basis in the NBA, Colangelo was pretty passionate that moving O'Neal or Andrea Bargnani was not in the cards for the Raptors. Miami HEAT President Pat Riley mirrored those sentiments yesterday to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sentinel , saying that a trade being imminent was premature, or as Riley said it "putting the cart before the horse". Neither side of this deal is denying there have been discussions, but both sides seem to be distancing themselves from the notion that a deal is close. Jermaine O'Neal sat out yesterday's Raptors' game with a sore knee, while Miami's Shawn Marion did not play due to a strained groin. The popular belief is that Miami wants to see O'Neal on the floor and productive before they pull the trigger on a deal that could derail their playoff goals. The primary hold up on Miami's side of any deal is the belief that the HEAT are playing good basketball as constructed and change for change sake is not in the team's short term interest. Marion is not likely in Miami's long term plans, despite rumors that they would re-sign him this summer if he was agreeable to a cheaper deal. The HEAT are not as concerned about getting value out of him now unless it improves the team. On The Raptors' side, despite Colangelo's denials there is belief that Bryan may be getting pressure from the top to make a bigger bolder change, the Raptors are really only four games out of the playoff picture in the east, but having lost five straight games makes change a foregone conclusion. It's fair to say Colangelo may not want to trade Jermaine O'Neal and concede that the trade that brought him to Toronto was a failure, but the reality is if things do not improve in Toronto, Colangelo may find himself on the hot seat for the first time in his career.

Heat end long trip with 104-94 win over Thunder (AP)

Miami Heat guard Chris Quinn, left, passes off under the basket in front of Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chris Wilcox, right, in the second quarter of an NBA basketball game in Oklahoma City, Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009. Miami won 104-94.

Having the circus in Miami sure took its toll on the Heat. Dwyane Wade's legs were sore, Udonis Haslem had a bad back and Shawn Marion was too hurt to play. Even at the end of a seven-game, 12-day road trip, the Heat still had enough to pull through. Wade had 32 points and racked up most of his 10 assists while helping thwart Oklahoma City's fourth-quarter rally as the Heat beat the Thunder 104-94...

Cavaliers keep winning, Pistons keep sliding (AP)

January 17, 2009

LeBron James had a head cold, the Cavaliers had two starters out hurt, and the entire team was playing on very little sleep after a late night of travel. Not that any of that matters when Cleveland is playing at home. James shook off a poor shooting night against the Bulls to finish with 29 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, and the Cavaliers won their 20th straight at The Q, 92-78 over the...

Thunder down Pistons 89-79 for consecutive wins (AP)

January 17, 2009

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chris Wilcox goes up for a shot against the Detroit Pistons in the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game in Oklahoma City, Friday, Jan. 16, 2009. Wilcox had 17 points as Oklahoma City won the game 89-79.

The Thunder haven't looked this good since moving to town last year. The Pistons haven't looked this bad since long before that. Kevin Durant scored 32 points as Oklahoma City recorded the first consecutive wins in its brief history, delivering a knockout punch with a 13-point run to start the fourth quarter in an 89-79 win over Detroit on Friday night.

January 15, 2009

The rookie class always gets all of the attention because from even before the regular season begins people are making their picks and rankings for Rookie of the Year.
